I’m guessing they bought Gawker just for kinja’s source code or something...? wtf....
Edited to add— Okay so maybe it’s just Gawker getting shuttered... and the others are going to survive....

You’re missing what it’s saying. Gawker.com is shutting down. The other 6, Jalopnik, Deadspin, Gizmodo, Kotaku, Lifehacker, Jezebel are continuing on.

Exactly. Whether they decide to keep all of the other sites, and/or their subblogs, running is yet to be seen but as of right now only gawker.com is going down.

It seems to only apply to Gawker itself, and not “the six other sites that Univision bought” (including ours, apparently)
And who the fuck would want Kinja’s source code alone? Especially for $135 million!

With all the respect in the world for the Kinja development team (actual, no sarcasm intended), no, they would not spend that much just for Kinja.
Also, that post is very specific. “gawker.com will be shutting down”

Gawker is the blog most associated with the Hulk Hogan case, outing media executives as gay, etc.
Lifehacker and Deals make the money, Gawker is just not worth keeping from a business perspective.

As I understood it, the way the agreement was structured, they had an out for Gawker, and could exclude it from the purchase. I wonder if they did, or if they brought it on just to shutter it?

Looks like that announcement just for Gawker itself, not the whole site family. The buyer probably wants to get rid of the bad mojo now attached to the “Gawker” name. I bet the other sites survive.
Either way I’m taking Oppo off the grid and developing a messenger pigeon-based message board because Kinja is the worst.

As much as we constantly shit on Kinja, it’s actually not terrible compared to the wealth of other commenting platforms out there. It’s extensive, well maintained, and there’s probably a significant team of experienced people running it. My main gripe has been that they can’t leave it unchanged for six months.
But yeah, Univision didn’t pay $135 mil for Kinja. I assume they bought Gawker Media for the six other sites (and their subsidiaries), and only shut Gawker.com down because they feel it’s more hassle than it’s worth at this point.

As others have said, they said gawker.com. If they meant it as a whole they would have said gawker media. Plus, even they say it is being shut down it is like a local bar that has been in business for years getting a new own, it will shut down long enough to restructure.

Having Gawker.com exist at another company is just distracting. I’m sure The Conumerist leaving took many readers with it.

NPR said the sites are profitable, had lots of readers and they liked the tech aspect. That sounds like they will keep making money. What they cut, who knows.

The name is tainted. It may well come back with a rebranding. But I think it is also redundant to some other Univision holdings.

Despite the specificity of the article, does Oppo have an emergency assembly point in case the lights do go out next week? I know there’s been a lot of talk.

I’m hoping we don’t have to ever use it, but it’s there if need be. And it’s stable, and it works. Perhaps it could serve as a rally point until we figured out a long term solution, but I’m sure we’re in the clear for now.
Reddit is like a major city. There are good parts, bad parts, and OK parts.

Well, that’s a shame. The world needs more Gawkers. Even if a lot of folks around here didn’t agree with their point of view, or their methods, it’s good to ruffle feathers and point out hypocrisy. People need to have their ideals challenged. And, there were a lot of funny commenters over there.

Univision could not find a buyer for Gawker after they won the auction, and had no intent on running it themselves.
